There’s something new you’ll be able to share with your Facebook friends. An up-and-coming Facebook app will let users track their home energy use and compare it with friends. The goal is to get friends to compete against each other to use less energy and hold each other accountable for energy reducing goals.

The eco-friendly app is a collaboration between Facebook, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and energy reporting company OPower. The first-of-its kind app will allow consumers to benchmark their home energy use against a national average. App users can also compare their energy use with friends, enter energy-saving competitions and share tips on how to become more energy efficient.

The NRDC says improving energy efficiency could potentially save more than $700 billion dollars in the U.S. The group says the key is motivating people to take action which is why there is an effort to harness the power of social networking.

OPower has a network of more than 60 utility partners with millions of customers.Three utilities in the Los Angeles and Chicago areas will be the first to allow about 4 million customers to import their energy use data into the new app when it launches. The yet-to-be named app is expected to be launched early next year.
